Meet Dr. Mauro
Dr. John Mauro joined the practice many years ago and is the newest partner of North Shore Eye Care. Previously a pharmacist, Dr. Mauro earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from St. John's University, Queens, NY. He completed his medical school training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA and his internship at Mercy Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. He then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Nassau University Medical Center, Stony Brook University and the Veterans Medical Center. During his training, Dr Mauro was chosen to serve as chief resident in ophthalmology.
Afterwards, he completed his fellowship training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye Research Surgery Institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During his fellowships, Dr. Mauro specialized in the treatment of uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases as well as cataract surgery; implantation of multi-focal, accommodating and astigmatism correcting intraocular lenses. He spent additional training with the eye doctors at the Boston Eye Group, Massachusetts, where he learned the latest techniques in custom bladeless laser refractive surgery. Dr. Mauro has been active in ophthalmic research, co-authoring numerous book chapters, article publications and presentations; including the involvement in multiple prospective and experimental research trials.
Although Dr. Mauro specializes in the latest techniques of Cataract and LASIK surgery, he also sees and treats patients with all eye conditions. The eye doctor also specializes in the treatment of patients with autoimmune disorders and Uveitis or ocular inflammatory disease. Destructive inflammatory diseases of the eye such as uveitis are the third leading cause of blindness worldwide.
Dr. Mauro is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an attending ophthalmologist at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he devotes time to teaching surgery to ophthalmologists in training. He is also an attending ophthalmologist at St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital. Dr. Mauro is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of numerous professional societies including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the New York State Ophthalmologic Society, the New York State Medical Society and the Suffolk County Ophthalmologic Society.
Since 2008 and every year since, Consumers' Research Council of America continues to recognize Dr. Mauro as one of America's Top Ophthalmologists. For the several consecutive years now, Dr. Mauro has also been selected by patients to receive the prestigious Patients Choice Award and Compassionate Doctor Award. Dr. Mauro is driven to provide exceptional care and eyesight to all his patients. His experience, knowledge and passion for eye surgery, coupled with his bedside manner is the reason patients are confident and feel comfortable coming to North Shore Eye Care.
Dr. Mauro is fluent in Italian and Spanish. Outside his life as an ophthalmologist/surgeon, Dr. Mauro enjoys spending time with his family and friends, devotes time to health and fitness and is an avid winemaker.
