Blepharoplasty for Droopy Eyelid Bags & Dark Circles
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic eyelid procedure that improves the appearance of the eyes and surrounding tissues by removing excess droopy skin and fat from the eyelids. It is typically performed by an oculoplastic surgeon who has expert knowledge of this highly specialized area of the body.
Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis in an ambulatory surgery center under intravenous sedation. Twilight anesthesia helps to calm nerves before and during the procedure to allow for a safe experience. Prior to surgery, delicate and sophisticated measurements are made around the eyes to allow for optimal results after surgery. Enough skin needs to be left behind to allow for proper closure of the eyelids once a patient has recovered from the procedure.
An electrocautery tool or laser is typically used during blepharoplasty. This instrument allows for precise movements and reduces bleeding during the procedure. Skin, muscle, and/or fat is removed during blepharoplasty of the upper or lower eyelids. Microscopic stitches are placed in the natural creases of the eyelids to allow for hidden incisions once a full recovery has taken place.
Most patients get some bruising after Blepharoplasty. This can be minimized be using ice to the affected eyelids and resting after the procedure. Herbal supplements like arnica can also be applied to the area in order to help the body break down black and blue spots.
Blepharoplasty patients rarely experience pain after surgery. Occasionally, over the counter pain medications like Tylenol are recommended, but it is rare to even require that. Most patients are back on their feet a few days after surgery and will return to full activity within a few weeks.
An oculoplastic surgeon is a true eyelid expert who performs blepharoplasty thousands of times every year. Ophthalmic plastic surgery combines the microsurgery of ophthalmology with the cosmetic principles of plastic surgery to ensure expert care of this highly specialized region of the body.
