Crystalens®Intraocular lens technology is paving the way for millions of cataract patients to see the world with astounding clarity, and revolutionizing vision treatment. The Crystalens® IOL is able to mimic the eye’s natural lens in a number of ways. This provides patients with dramatically improved vision after cataract surgery and a significantly reduced need for corrective eyewear.

What Is the Crystalens® IOL?

Crystalens®, available at SightMD, is an intraocular lens implant designed to improve the vision of patients who have undergone cataract surgery. What is unique about the Crystalens® IOL is that it bends and flexes, mimicking the movements of the eye’s natural lens. Plus, Crystalens® is one of the few accommodating lenses on the market. With accomodating lenses, our physicians can restore the eyes’ ability to focus on both near and far objects, without the need for corrective eyewear. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003, Crystalens® has a very high rate of success among patients, with many achieving nearly 20/20 vision.

Who Is a Candidate for Crystalens®?

Patients who have been affected by cataracts and other eye conditions typically brought on by the aging process are generally good candidates for Crystalens®. Candidates can also include individuals of virtually any age who have cataracts caused by injury to the eye, overexposure to sunlight, genetics, and certain types of medications; however, intraocular lens implantation is generally performed on older patients. One of our experienced IOL vision treatment physicians here in Long Island will give you a thorough examination to determine whether you are a candidate for Crystalens®.

What to Expect During Your Crystalens® IOL Procedure

The Crystalens® IOL procedure is typically performed at one of our Long Island facilities on an outpatient basis. One of our ophthalmologists will eliminate the cataracts by removing the eye’s natural lens. Then, the Crystalens® implant will be inserted through a small, self-healing incision on the surface of the eye. The lens is typically folded to fit through the incision, but then unfolds and sets itself once it is inside the eye. The entire procedure usually lasts about 10 minutes.

What to Expect after Your Crystalens® IOL Procedure

Patients who have vision treatment with accommodating lenses at our Long Island practice can expect to spend very little time on recovery. We advise our patients to rest for a while immediately after surgery, and we will give you a prescription for eye drops to care for your eyes in the days that follow. Most individuals are able to return to work and light activity within a day; however, patients are advised not to participate in activities which may cause blood pressure to rise or have the potential to incite pressure in or injury to the eyes. Full results of the Crystalens® IOL implantation may take several weeks to become apparent.
