Asian Blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery is the commonly performed cosmetic oculoplastic surgery procedure in the world today. Many Asians from around the world travel to Seoul, South Korea, to have their procedure performed. North Shore Eye Care in Long Island, New York, also provides expert attention to Asian eyelids for patients looking to have blepharoplasty.
Asian blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin from the eyelids and creating an eyelid crease that is not apparent prior to the procedure. Once the crease is formed with surgery, a double eyelid is created. Traditionally, the double eyelid is thought of as being more of a “Western” look.
Double eyelid surgery is a safe outpatient procedure performed in an ambulatory surgery center. We offer state of the art ambulatory surgery centers throughout Long Island – Brentwood, Melville, Carle Place, and Shirley. The procedure can be performed with local anesthesia and/or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Usually taking less than thirty minutes to operate on both upper eyelids, Asian Blepharoplasty offers a relatively easy recovery. Most patients leave the operating suite with tiny stitches in the lids that will remain in place for one week until they are removed at the first post-operative appointment.
For the first week after double eyelid surgery most patients are swollen with slight bruising around the eyes. Rest and ice to the affected area will help the swelling to resolve quickly. An antibiotic ointment is applied to the incision and sutures to decrease the already very small risk of infection. Most patients require little to no pain medication after the procedure.
The goals of the surgery are to create an eyelid crease while maintaining the Asian cultural appearance of the lids. With careful measurements during the pre-operative consultation and detailed drawings prior to surgery, symmetry can be achieved. Most patients will not require Asian blepharoplasty or re-operations once it has been performed.
