LASIK is the most commonly used surgical procedure for correcting near-sightedness (myopia) far-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The surgeon creates a “flap” at the surface of the cornea, then folds it back so that the laser can access and re-shape the cornea. The LASIK procedure takes about 10-15 minutes per eye: The surgeon administers anesthetic eyedrops, and then applies an instrument called a lid speculum to keep the eye from blinking and closing. The cornea is re-shaped by the excimer laser as it re-contours the corneal bed specifically to the patient’s idesign prescription requirements. The laser uses a light beam to precisely remove a pre-determined amount of tissue across the cornea. No sutures are required. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eyedrops are applied. An eyeshield is applied to protect the eye while it is healing. Both eyes can be treated on the same day. Patients can resume a majority of activities on the day following surgery.
We have been a leader in bladeless custom lasik for years. Our board certified lasik surgeons perform the best in lasik and talk our patients through every procedure. Our long island patients enjoy our smithtown new york eye care facility. For our fearful patients, we offer a light sedative to help calm your nerves prior to lasik laser eye surgery. Many of our patients are not sure if they are a candidate because of their age. Some people tend to think that if your not in your twenties or thirties then they are no longer a candidate for lasik. This is not true. At SightMD/North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown on Long Island in New York our doctors feel that this is an important issue. Typically, those patients that have bladeless custom lasik or ilasik under age 40 to 42 are able to see great in the distance and great close up. When presbyopia sets in the early 40s, anyone with great distance vision begins to have difficulty with close up vision, like reading. For those patients that have had laser eye surgery or laser vision correction, they will need reading glasses just like any patient with great distance vision who has not had lasik. Patients that are nearsighted, can read with glasses off, but will need bifocals to keep their glasses on in this situation. At Smithtown we perform many lasik laser eye surgery procedures on those over 40. It is important that those patients know that although their distance vision will be outstanding, they still may need help for seeing at near.
