How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?

Blepharoplasty is procedure performed by an oculoplastic surgeon to rejuvenate the eyelids and restore droopy or saggy tissues back to their youthful state. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Typically performed in an ambulatory surgery center, blepharoplasty leaves patients with a natural enhancement of the tissues around the eyes.

When the extra skin above the eyelids begins to interfere with peripheral vision, many commercial insurance carriers and Medicare will cover the costs of blepharoplasty. Typically, this occurs when the sagging tissues touch or hang over the eyelashes. External clinical photographs in the office and automated visual field testing can tell us how much peripheral vision has been lost by the excess skin above the eyes. This condition is known as dermatochalasis.

Many patients choose to have upper or lower blepharoplasty for cosmetic reasons. This is usually done to enhance the appearance of eyelid bags and loose skin around the eyes.

Blepharoplasty is usually performed in an ambulatory surgery center under intravenous (IV) sedation. Surgery usually takes less than one hour and patients can go home directly after a short stay in the recovery room. Stitches are placed in the upper and/or lower eyelids that are removed at the first post-operative visit one week after surgery.

Most patients will have some bruising and swelling after blepharoplasty. Rest and ice will help to minimize the bruising and to ensure a safe and fast recovery. It is unusual to experience much pain after surgery. Typically, Tylenol is the only pain medication necessary after surgery, but many patients do not even require any pain killers.

An antibiotic ointment is prescribed to decrease the small risk of infection from the procedure. The ointment can be applied to the eye stitches to make sure the healing tissues are safe from bacteria or other potential hazards.
