Prior to joining SightMD, eye surgeon Alexander Hatsis, M.D., F.A.C.S. was a founding member of Long Island Vision Experts. Dr. Hatsis specializes in complex Cataract Surgery at SighMD and laser vision correction. Dr. Hatsis was one of the expert U.S. surgeons to help gain FDA-approval for laser vision correction and was the first surgeon to perform LASIK on Long Island in 1995. Dr. Hatsis authored 16 research articles and written several textbook chapters on LASIK Surgery at SightMD and cataract surgery. He also participated in FDA approval of Phakic Implant Lenses and was the first on Long Island to treat Keratoconus with Collagen Cross-Linking in 2007.
Dr. Alexander Hatsis’ international medical career began with a full scholarship to the prestigious University of Bologna School of Medicine and Surgery. He later completed his ophthalmology training at Nassau County Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Hatsis is currently the Senior Attending Surgeon for resident training and the Director of Cataract and Refractive Surgery at Nassau University Hospital Medical Center. He has been teaching senior residents complex cataract and LASIK surgery for over 20 years.
In addition to research, patient care and teaching for the past 18 years, Dr. Hatsis has been traveling abroad twice a year to provide cataract surgery to the medically under-served people in Central and South America. For six straight years, his peers have voted him as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Dr. Hatsis has also been named a top doctor by Newsday for 5 consecutive years. He has been recognized as a compassionate doctor by being awarded Humanitarian of the Year by the Salvation Army. Dr. Hatsis is the Director of Cataract and Refractive Surgery at Nassau University Medical Center.
Dr. Hatsis speaks fluent Italian, Spanish and limited Greek. He enjoys surfing, jet skiing, scuba and hanging out with his family.
