Dr. Leon Rafailov, M.D.Dr. Rafailov is a fellowship-trained Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon who focuses on a wide range of plastic and reconstructive surgery in the area around the eyes. His areas of expertise include the eyelids, forehead, mid-face, orbit, and tear ducts. He has successfully completed thousands of surgeries in reconstructive, cosmetic, functional, and orbital surgery. Dr. Rafailov is trained in advanced techniques in minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, facial reconstruction, trauma surgery, orbital surgery, oncologic surgery, and cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Rafailov was raised in Brooklyn and attended Stuyvesant High School where he learned to appreciate a depth of academic rigor and made some of his closest friends. He later attended Brandeis University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science, double majoring in Biology and Public Health. While in college, he took every opportunity to learn about the medical field and started treating patients at an early age, volunteering as an EMT in his spare time.

Following college, Dr. Rafailov received his MD from SUNY Downstate, which he chose for its excellence in clinical hands-on training. He went on to complete his intern year at Yale where he split his time between general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, and pediatric rotations. Following his intern year, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at Rutgers. During his residency, he was invited to speak at numerous national and international conferences. Dr. Rafailov received multiple awards for scientific research in oculoplastics. He also received a humanitarian award upon graduation for his focus in compassionate, patient-oriented care.

After residency, Dr. Rafailov completed a 2-year fellowship in oculofacial, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery at the Duke Eye Center, widely regarded as one of the best eye hospitals in the country. While in fellowship, he acted as a clinical instructor and trained dozens of ophthalmology and plastic surgery residents. Here, he received the prestigious Hornaday Fellow Award given for excellence in teaching. As an on-call surgeon, he was responsible for treating patients that were referred for severe infections and trauma, taking on some of the most complex cases across the state. While at Duke, he also served as an attending surgeon for the Durham VA Hospital where he trained residents in both the clinic and operating room. Dr. Rafailov has published numerous journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters focusing on a wide range of topics in oculoplastic surgery.

Dr. Rafailov prides himself in providing specialized and patient-focused care using the most advanced surgical techniques available. He is well known by his patients for his personalized and attentive care.

In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, gardening, and tennis.
