Michelle Liebert, M.D. is an Ophthalmologist who specializes in Pediatric eye care. She completed a fellowship at Harvard’s Boston Children’s Hospital and practices at our Smithtown and Riverhead offices.
Dr. Liebert is a board certified Pediatric Ophthalmologist and Strabismus surgeon who has been practicing on Long Island for the past twelve years. Specializing in Strabismus surgery, Amblyopia treatment, Retinopathy of Prematurity, Pediatric Plastics and all aspects of Pediatric care; Dr. Liebert is excited to join SightMD’s impressive team. Prior to joining the eye doctors at SightMD, Dr. Liebert practiced at the Center for Eyecare in West Islip, NY for ten years and began her career practicing in Mineola, NY.
Meet Dr. Michelle Liebert
Her expertise includes; General Pediatric Ophthalmology, performing adjustable and non-adjustable strabismus surgery, and working with babies and children with special needs (including Autism, Down Syndrome and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)). Oftentimes, an eye exam can help determine why a child may be developmentally delayed. Once dilated, she is able to determine if there is any pathology explaining decreased vision or eyes that aren’t straight. There are many genetic diseases that present in the eyes as well and Dr. Liebert can help contribute to determining a diagnosis in these children and continue with their ongoing care. Even in infants, she is able to determine if glasses or surgery are required in order to allow them to reach their full visual potential. In addition, she treats adults with diplopia from such etiologies as trauma, cranial neuropathies, tumors and decompensated childhood strabismus.
A Mom herself, Dr. Liebert takes a personal interest in each and every one of her patients, caring for each as if they were her own. All of five-feet tall, the children don’t usually feel threatened by her smiling face and comforting demeanor. One of her favorite aspects of being a doctor is that she can follow her patients from prematurity until adulthood. She takes pride in the fact that some of her patients start out with poor vision and crossed eyes and become smiling 20/20 patients with straight eyes.
Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Liebert is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). The eye doctor completed a specialized Pediatric Ophthalmology fellowship at Harvard’s Boston Children’s Hospital in 2002 and completed her residency at NYU/Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital in 2001. Dr. Liebert received her M.D. from Upstate Medical in Syracuse, NY and holds a B.S. in accounting from the State University of New York at Binghamton. Dr. Liebert grew up on Long Island and now takes care of many of her teachers’ children and grandchildren. When she’s not being a doctor, she spends her time with her husband and three lovable boys. She likes to ski, play classical piano and exercise.
