Bio
Joaquin Tosi, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases. Born into a family of ophthalmologists in Argentina, Dr. Tosi moved to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming a clinician-scientist. In 2006, Dr. Tosi joined Dr. Stephen Tsang’s laboratory research team at Columbia University, and was involved in research on gene therapy and stem-cell therapies for retinal degeneration-associated diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. During this period, he was trained in the diagnosis and treatment of inherited retinal diseases and electrophysiology. He created the first retinal dystrophy clinic at New Mexico providing state-of-the art testing, including gene testing. Dr. Tosi is a vitreo-retinal specialist who sees patients at SightMD at the offices located in Smithtown, Bay Shore, and Rockville Centre. Dr. Tosi has been involved as principal investigator in many seminal retinal clinical research trials and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals. His clinical specialties include diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous, including diabetic retinopathy, complex retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, secondary intraocular lens fixation, macular and submacular surgery, retinal vascular disease, age-related macular degeneration, ocular trauma, and ocular inflammation. Dr. Tosi is licensed to practice in New York and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
