Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that raises sagging eyelids and reduces puffiness around the eyes. It provides aesthetic benefits, but can also provide significant benefits for your eyesight. Severely sagging eyelids can droop in front of your pupil, physically blocking the depth of your field of vision. Drooping upper eyelids (ptosis) are often a direct result of aging. In some cases, this condition can also be a symptom of a neuro-ophthalmic condition like cranial nerve palsy or Horner syndrome. During eyelid surgery, your surgeon will tighten any loose muscles and remove excess skin to fully restore your field of vision.
The Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Before your procedure, you will undergo a thorough consultation. Your doctor will determine your candidacy for eyelid surgery, and look for any health conditions that may be causing your ptosis. During your consultation, a doctor will take photos of your eyelids. You’ll also discuss what you’re looking to get out of the eyelid surgery, and whether or not you have realistic expectations.
Together, you will create a treatment plan designed to address your individual needs. Although we primarily perform eyelid surgery for its health benefits, your doctor will also take your cosmetic concerns into consideration. Here at SightMD, we will plan a procedure that can help you look several years younger. Together, you and your doctor will come up with the best possible plan! This may vary from patient to patient, but we want every patient at SightMD to leave us feeling satisfied and happy with their results.
Eyelid surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Most patients undergo eyelid surgery while under under local anesthesia with sedation. After sedation, the procedure will usually take less than two hours to complete. Eyelid surgery can target the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. If you are undergoing upper eyelid surgery, your doctor will make an incision in the natural fold of your eyelid. This is done to minimize obvious scarring. During lower eyelid surgery, your doctor will typically make the incision in your lower lash line. Through these openings, your doctor will carefully tighten loosened muscles and remove excess tissue and fat deposits. Finally, the doctor will close the incisions in a way that will leave minimal scarring.
For more comprehensive cosmetic results, your doctor may also perform laser skin resurfacing. Using a CO2 laser, your doctor can remove the top layer of damaged skin to spur collagen growth and the development of a rejuvenated skin layer. This procedure is especially helpful in removing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Eyelid surgery is just one of several ophthalmic plastic surgery procedures that SightMD has to offer our Long Island patients!
Recovery and Results
Eyelid surgery involves minimal recovery time. For the first 48 hours, you may experience some swelling and discomfort, which you can usually treat with over-the-counter pain medication. You should also use cold compresses, sleep with your head elevated, and engage only in light physical activity. You can typically resume your normal activity level in 7 to 10 days following your surgery.
If your drooping eyelids were impairing your vision, you will notice an improvement immediately following your surgery. The cosmetic enhancements will appear more gradually as swelling subsides. You may experience some discomfort, but recovering from eyelid surgery should not be a painful experience. Contact your doctor if it feels like something is not right!
When your healing has been completed, you can expect to see a rejuvenated and more alert appearance. The results of your surgery will last for years to come, although age will continue to affect the elasticity of your skin and muscles. Your field of vision will most likely remain unobstructed for the rest of your life.
Although it varies for most patients, healing after eyelid surgery can take several months. During this time, you’ll be able to see results, and have improved vision. While your eyelids are still healing, you need to be careful near your incisions! Avoid any contact sports or activities that could result in getting hit in the head or face.
