Does LASIK Eye Surgery Last Forever?

A lot has been written about LASIK Eye Surgery, ranging from the risks involved with the operation to how long the healing process takes, among other topics. To this list, SightMD adds a question that many candidates have: Will LASIK improve their vision for all time? Let us discuss…

How Long Does LASIK Last?

The answer to this question is kind of divided. Thanks to LASIK, a variety of eye conditions may be treated, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. And yes, the benefits of LASIK surgery—where vision is improved through laser vision correction—do indeed last forever. The long-lasting benefits of LASIK, however, cannot change the natural aging process.

Can LASIK Wear Off?

It is possible that the benefits of LASIK surgery may decrease over time. When this occurs, some patients may choose to have enhancement surgery between five and 10 years after the initial procedure. It should also be noted that patients who undergo LASIK surgery may still need other types of eye-related care—from wearing eyeglasses to having cataract surgery—later in life. This is all part of the natural aging process that affects everyone in one way or another. (While we that think LASIK is a marvel in innovative eye surgery, it can’t fix everything—advancing age being one example.)
