What to Expect After LASIK Surgery

Patients who undergo laser vision correction often experience improvement in their vision within 24 hours of the procedure. It is important to note, however, that changes to your eye will occur subtly during the months after LASIK surgery, and you should expect your vision to stabilize in about one to three months.

Recovering After LASIK Surgery

Mild irritation, dryness, or light sensitivity may occur immediately following LASIK surgery. Patients are encouraged to keep their eyes closed as much as possible during the first few hours and to go home and rest, as even a quick procedure like LASIK can be physically tiring. Resting right after LASIK surgery helps reduce irritation and supports the early healing process.

Patients will be provided with eye drops that should be administered at home as directed. Wearing any protective eyewear provided by your surgeon—especially while sleeping or napping—is important, as your eyes will be more sensitive during the initial recovery period. Rubbing your eyes should always be avoided, and this is especially critical after LASIK, as it can disrupt the corneal flap. If your eyes feel itchy or dry, use your prescribed drops instead of touching them.

Blurry or fluctuating vision is common in the first 24 hours and may take a few days to fully stabilize. Many patients are able to return to work the following day, while others notice more gradual improvement. Foggy, hazy, or “smoky” vision can occur early on and is a normal part of the healing process. Vision clarity typically continues to improve over time.

These type of symptoms and side effects after LASIK surgery are generally mild and usually resolve within a few days as the eyes continue to heal.

The Follow-Up Appointment

If you have LASIK surgery, return to SightMD within 24 hours for a follow-up appointment. Your eye doctor will check your healing progress with a comprehensive eye exam and vision test. If needed, they may prescribe antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection. This appointment is also a chance for you to ask questions and receive guidance on post-surgery eye care. Expect to have regular eye exams in the months following your surgery to ensure your vision is improving as expected.

Even though your vision has improved, getting LASIK does not mean that you will stop seeing your eye doctor. It can take several months before your eyes have completely recovered after undergoing LASIK. It’s important to attend all follow-up appointments, even if your vision has already started improving after LASIK eye surgery. These appointments are a crucial part of the recovery process.

Supporting a Smooth LASIK Recovery

To support proper healing and achieve the best possible visual outcome, your eye surgeon may recommend avoiding certain activities during the days and weeks following LASIK surgery. These precautions help reduce irritation, prevent infection, and protect your healing eyes.

Patients are typically advised to avoid:

  • Wearing eye makeup or lotions
  • Participating in contact sports or strenuous activities
  • Rubbing or touching the eyes
  • Swimming or using hot tubs
  • Prolonged or excessive screen time

If you’re unsure when it’s safe to return to a specific activity, the doctors and staff at SightMD are always available to provide guidance and support throughout your recovery.
