What is a Cataract

Cataracts occur when the proteins in the lens of your eye cluster together and get cloudy. If you have cataracts, you may experience foggy or fuzzy vision, difficulty with bright lights (glare or halos), or changes in your perception of colors. Learn More about Cataract Symptoms >

What’s the difference between traditional (Phaco) and Laser (Femto)?

Traditional cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the world, and uses a technique called Phacoemulsification. This procedure allows your surgeon to break up and remove the clouded lens through a small incision at the edge of your cornea. You also have the option to upgrade to a laser-assisted surgery, which can be a gentler procedure. This is usually suggested for patients with astigmatism as the laser can create specialized incisions to reshape the cornea and improve vision. Benefits of Laser Cataract Surgery >

Premium IOLs: What’s the difference and who’s a candidate?

Standard IOLs (or IntraOcular Lenses) will improve distance vision, but you may still need to wear glasses, especially if you have astigmatism. Opting for a Premium IOL can reduce the need for glasses after surgery, with options for multi-focal lenses and astigmatism correction. Your Ophthalmologist will go over these options with you and determine if you are a candidate for an upgrade to Premium IOLs.

What will my cataract surgery cost?

The exact cost of surgery will vary depending on the options you choose. Upgrades like premium lenses or laser-assisted surgery are elective additions and typically come with an extra cost. SightMD offers financing options through CareCredit or Alphaeon to help our patients with added expenses. Learn More about Paying for Your Care >

Does cataract surgery wear off?

Once you remove a lens that’s been affected by cataracts, the cataract will not come back. While your eyes heal and the new lens settles in place, it’s normal to experience fluctuating or shaky vision, shadows or flickering sensations, or floaters. All of this should clear up after a few months leaving you with clear, cloud-free vision.
