What is Oculoplastic Surgery?

Oculoplastics, also known as ophthalmic plastic surgery, includes several cosmetic and reconstructive surgical techniques. Doctors used these techniques to treat the eyelids, tear ducts, face, and eye sockets. The primary purpose of most of these treatments is to improve vision and ocular health. However, many of these treatments can also provide an aesthetic enhancement. At SightMD We will take careful note of your needs and goals. This allows us to help you achieve comfort, improved vision, and favorable aesthetic results whenever possible.

nonsurgical

  • Blepharoplasty - Performed for cosmetic or medical reasons by removing the excess skin and tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids.
  • Ptosis - Repair surgery tightens the upper eyelid to correct a drooping eyelid caused by a weakness or separation of muscles within the eyelid.
  • Brow Lifting - Removes the excess skin from the forehead to minimize or eliminate the moderate to severe lines and creases from the upper face.
  • Mini Facelift - Treats more modest signs of aging on the face than a full facelift by removing some excess skin and tightening certain areas.
  • Canthoplasty - A specialized eyelid surgery that creates an upward slant in the outer corner of the eye to correct drooping or for a cat eye look.
  • LASIK - a popular eye treatment that can improve vision problems and eliminate the need for corrections.

What conditions are treated with Oculoplastic Surgery?

Our oculoplastic surgeons provide care for patients of all ages with a variety of conditions, including:

  • Eyelid Reconstruction After Skin Cancer - removes suspicious spots on the eyelid and around the eye area for testing. It also includes reconstructing the area if needed.
  • Entropion/Ectropion - Eyelid repair is a surgery to treat the problems caused by the disorders ectropion (eyelids that turn out) or entropion (eyelids that turn in).
  • Eyelid Tumor Removal - A careful surgery to remove a tumor from the eyelid or eye socket for medical evaluation. Afterwards doctors then restore a normal appearance.
  • Thyroid Eye Disease - causes the muscles and soft tissues in the eye socket to swell, which can cause the eyes to bulge. Orbital decompression surgery may be necessary to restore the eyes to their normal position.
  • Enucleation - or eye removal, may be the best treatment for blind, painful eyes that no longer serve a purpose.
  • Evisceration - involves removing the inside of the eye, while leaving the muscles and outer structure intact.
  • Exenteration - can involve the removal of the eye, eyelid, and surrounding tissues when an aggressive tumor is present in or around the eye socket.
  • Orbital Fractures - Orbital fractures usually occur because of a blow to the face. In some cases, the eye muscle can become caught in the fracture, obstructing movement. Surgical treatment involves freeing the muscle and, in some cases, reconstructing the eye socket.
